The five steps on the Resilience Roadmap

These days, resilience is deemed one of the most crucial traits to have. But how to get there?

The road to resilience is made up of five crucial steps:

1. Presence
2. Purpose
3. Power
4. People
5. Preparation

 

Here's a quick intro into the 5 Ps of the Resilience Roadmap, first developed by Dr Mark Atkinson of the Human Potential Institute.

1. Presence.

The cornerstone of resilience, without presence it's impossible to be resilient and perform highly. We need presence to be aware of our mental and emotional state, otherwise we fall victim to automatic behaviours.

 2. Purpose.

When we truly and passionately believe in what we're doing, we're somehow able to dig into deep reservoirs of determination and grit to get to where we want to be.

At the other end of the scale, a lack of meaning or purpose makes life a lot harder and more stressful when dealing with challenges.

 3. Power.

We need physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy - without it, what can we achieve it? Abundant energy makes us feel incredibly resilient.

When we feel depleted, we feel the opposite. The key here is energy management - taking care of your mind and body to build up a good reservoir of energy.

4. People.

No man or woman is an island.

We need decent people around us. Resilient people are well connected and know they can ask for help if needed - and they do ask for help.

5. Preparation.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

This is crucial for resilience. Feeling disorganised and overwhelmed makes us feel vulnerable and on the back foot. Resilient people take responsibility of what they're in control of, prepare for challenges and let go of what they can't control.

 

There's usually at least one weak spot in the chain that needs strengthening.
